Team Nishan, Comprising of Ms.Sarah DeNicola,Project Officer and Maelle Brichard, Project Coordinator Police reforms along with Director addressed a group of 500 young students from different colleges on the role of youth and Universal Declaration of Human rights.
As a key element in their campaign to raise awareness of human rights among India’s budding generation of leaders, Team Nishan spoke on October 27 at NCC’s (National Cadet Corps) 2009 annual leadership camp hosted by the Ministry of Defense at Pehowa, just outside of Kurukshtra, Haryana. Over 500 young leaders gathered to hear three talks presented by Nishan.
Sarah DeNicola, Project Officer for Team Nishan, presented “The Role of Youth Leadership in Democracies,” in which she stressed the importance of public service and gave a brief demonstration of leadership strategies. Speaking second was Maelle Brichard, Project Coordinator for Team Nishan. Ms. Brichard addressed the crowd on “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” providing the background and potential uses of this document in contemporary India. Aridaman Jit Singh, from Team Nishan, concluded with a presentation on the “Right to Information Act,” providing the crowd of uniformed youth information and pamphlets, courtesy of CHRI (Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative) on the processes of filing a Right to Information Application.
The NCC is an organization that seeks to provide training for youth to explore their potential as rising leaders. In addition to the information session given by Nishan, students completed rigorous physical training, participated in adventure activities, and heard from other public service organizations such as the Red Cross. This collaboration was organized by Colonel F.S. Virk, Commanding Officer, 10 Haryana Batallion, NCC.
