Political leadership cutting across party lines, welcomed the Team Nishan initiative on Police Reforms from Peoples Perspective.
Team Nishan interacted vast majority of political leaders and police officers on the PRPP Campaign. It was felt by majority of polictical leaders that all the governance institutions were founded by masters of colonial India to maintain their hegemony. But the bureaucrats did not take any initiative to reform these institutions in accordance to the needs of democratic nature of governance rather they took advantage of the situation and proceeded on the lines of colonial masters and exploited the public and amassed wealth. Ch.Surinder Singh and Mr.Happy Sandhu of Indian national Congress from Jullundar felt that it was most essential to bring changes into governance institutions to meet the democratic aspirations of the citizens of this largest electoral democracy of the world. Some of the police officers whom we met sounded very much optimistic and said much awaited democratic change is now on its way with the active participation of various voluntary groups of vigilent citizens and the media and they felt PRPP itself was an example.
Mr.Gurpratap Singh Wadala who is closely attached to grass roots as a political leader of the people felt that Police of Independent India has been let down by inefficiency and corruption.
Mr.Mukhtiyar Singh Hayer, Sarpanch of village Heeran in Nakodar subdivision welcomed the campaign and was optimistic that PRPP will bring the public and police closer and the civilian oversight will ensure performance. Each politician considered the corruption in police as an unfortunate result of antiquated structure. The political leaders felt that they were accountable to people for performance but when it comes to bureaucratic frame work, it sans accountability and performance both.
