| India is facing a tremendous barrier in its quest for progressive development. The collapse of confidence in the system is corroding the sense of safety and security that functioning democracies supply citizens. The very institutions whose responsibility it is to provide protection are those whom the population fears, as corruption within them is so pervasive it has halted any effective functioning. The Judiciary, Executive and Legislature have all together failed India and its poor. They feed off of one another’s corruption, working in collusion, and no longer provide any service to the common people. |
Public officials and officers are pocketing millions of rupees at the expense of the victimized Indian people, and where personal profit is not made, the apathy and inaction makes mockery with complete immunity advanced by the eternal delays of judicial system. As Arundhati Roy,
social activist and celebrated author states: “…We are creating a situation where one set of people know that even if they rape and burn people alive, and even if there is enough evidence that they have done so, they will walk free. And another set of people know they have no hope for justice.”
It is essential for the health of this suffering democracy that we generate awareness of this corruption amongst the people, and empower them to take action against it. This is the goal Nishan strives to achieve.
Through such campaigns as Power to the People and Unsung Heroes, Nishan seeks to provide education to the people and provides them help network to prevent further abuses of power. Presently, there is very little awareness in the country. People are unaware of what their tax money is intended for, and that their tax Rupees are actually being absorbed by the system and little of it reaches the people in any form of development.
It is Nishan’s philosophy that people living within a democracy must be informed, and that it is these people who must demand that their institutions are held accountable. The branches of our government are not governed by the Rule of Law and cannot be expected to decide for themselves that it is time for radical change. It is a people’s democracy and the people must take action.

Unsung Heroes
The ‘Unsung Heroes’ Adventure and Leadership Camp is held annually for the widows and children of men who sacrificed their lives while serving their country in the police/armed forces. These widows and children have lost the emotional and financial support of the head of their family and endure the difficulties of living in a society where they are stigmatised and excluded.
During these camps, we endeavour to generate awareness on human rights and dignity, impart career guidance and motivation and develop leadership skills in the participants. We hope that these children will possess a greater awareness of the society in which they live and become advocates of a better future.
