“Better Together” Initiative – PRPP Campaign

“Better Together” initiative is an excellent effort to bring Police and Public together. The Collonial model of police in India has kept the situation as “US v/s Them” when it comes to talking of police reforms or Police Public relationship in its day today functioning. Team Nishan has began its consultations with Police authorities, Bar associations,Academic Institutions to come forward and join the “Better Together” initiative.

Mr.Trilochan Singh,Advocate POC(Point of Contact) ushered the Team to Kurukshetra Bar Association office bearers

On 08th Nov,In the morning meeting at Campaign Headquarter’s of Team Nishan, while brain storming on Police Public relationship, Project Coordinator Ms.Susana Costa was probably not aware that implementation of her idea in the form of “Better Together” initiative is history in the making not only for the Indian Police but also the Indian public that has kept fearing the very police that is supposed to protect it. The pernicious corruption, apathy, high handed attitude, excessive use of force, extrajudicial killings and immunity to accountablity on the part of police in general has kept alinating the people and leading to the emergence of new class struggles within Indian democracy.

As a sequel to the series of activities that are part of PRPP Campaign, “Better together” initiative is an endeavour to empower the public through education on role and functioning of police in a democracy. It is being developed to ensure participation of police & public in monitoring the limitations and challenges of functioning of local police its resources and its performance.

Team Nishan undertook consultations with office Bearers of Kurukshetra Bar association, District Police & Academic institutions on begining of the initiative to form up a Team comprising of local police officers, members of Bar and members of local NGos and educate school children, college students about the role of the police in their lives and their responsiblity as vigilant citizens.

Sh.Jagjit Singh Virk, Advocate while speaking on behalf of Bar association said such initiative was urgently needed and they will go all out support it.

Sh.Sultan Singh, IPS, Supdt. of Police Kurukshetra assured the Team Nishan members that district police will extend all support for the success of initiative and depute its best officers to address the students on their rights in a democracy.
